First–no, this is not a commentary on the current political races.

This is, instead, a much more personal reminiscence.

Back when Natasha and I were preparing for the birth of our first child, our calendar was filled with the usual appointments, get-togethers, and reminders, at least until THAT DAY. After the expected birth date of our child, there were no events planned. We couldn’t even conceive (pun intended) what life would be life after THAT DAY. We scheduled nothing after THAT DAY. It was a wall, and beyond it was a void shrouded in deep fog. (more…)

It seems like forever since I last wrote a blog for Children of the Wells. Come to think of it, I hardly wrote a blog for my own site, natashasshelf.blogspot.com, all summer. Besides being busy with life, I was scrambling to edit some of the story posts mere days before they appeared online. I was grammar editing for Laura Fischer, our usual grammar editor, but since she wrote The Doctor’s Assistant, I was her backup eye. Deadlines have been in flux (hence the editing only days before publishing), and we realized that in order to continue to provide high quality stories to you, we were going to have to cut down on quantity. Now What?

Second, let me take a moment to explain a bit more of our conception of Children of the Wells.

We conceived Children of the Wells not as a series, but as a world, and we envisioned our stories, such as The Select’s Bodyguard, not as complete novels, but as episodes. We were inspired by shared universes such as the Star Wars novels and Marvel comics to create a space where characters can have separate storylines that still affect one another. And we were inspired by serialized TV (for examples, see my last blog) to craft our stories as novellas that act in many ways as episodes. Each has a complete emotional arc but clearly transitions into the next novel. (more…)
